Very popular tea time snack in southern region of India . It is healthy and delicious as its made with lentils and spices.
Preparation Time- 10 min
Cooking Time- 15- 20 min
Channa Dal – 3/4 cup
Urid Dal – 1/4 cup
Oil – To deep fry
Onion – 1 medium
Ginger – 2 inch
Chilli Powder – 1/2 tsp
Curry Leaves – 1 spring
Turmeric Powder – pinch
Cumin Seeds – 1/2 tsp
Coriander Chopped – 2 tsp
Green Chillies Chopped – 3 no
Salt as required
Rinse lentils couple of times and soak lentils in hot water for 3 to 4 hours .
Drain lentils well . Grind to a coarse mixture without adding water.
only add little water if its too hard to grind.
To the mixture add chopped onions,ginger,red chilli powder, turmeric,chopped curry leaves ,coriander,green chillies,salt, cumin seeds. Mix well and let it rest for 30 min . Now beat the mixture by hand to fluff it up a little bit.
Heat oil in pan on medium heat . Take a small portion of the mixture flatten a bit and drop it in oil and cook till its nice slightly dark golden colour .
Drain off excess oil on kitchen towel .
Serve with peas chutney or mint chutney
Tip: cook on a medium heat as high heat may lead vada to be uncooked in centre
